Kenya İçişleri Bakanı Joseph Ole Lenku, yaptığı açıklamada, güvenlik güçlerinin alışveriş merkezinde konrolü sağladığını, saldırganların elindeki tüm rehinelerin kurtarıldığını ve operasyonda sona gelindiğini belirtti. Saldırıda 62 kişinin hayatını kaybettiğini, 170 kişinin de yaralandığını ifade eden Lenku, dört gün süren operasyonlarda 11 güvenlik görevlisinin yaralandığını ve binden fazla rehinenin kurtarıldığını kaydetti.
Lenku, alışveriş merkezine yapılan son operasyonlarda 3 saldırganın daha öldürüldüğünü, 10 kadar şüphelinin de gözaltına alındığını söyledi. Bu arada, Westgate alışveriş merkezinde güvenlik önlemleri devam ediyor. Askeri helikopter, sabahın ilk saatlerinden beri alışveriş merkezi üzerinde uçuşunu sürdürürken, polis ve askeri araçlar alışveriş merkezini kuşatmış durumda. Ayrıca içeride saldırgan bulunması ihtimaline karşı özel eğitimli güvenlik birimleri hazır bekletiliyor. Dört gündür dünya ve ülke gündemine oturan olayla ilgili Devlet Başkanı Uhutru Kenyatta'nın bugün bir açıklama yapması bekleniyor. Saldırıyı Somali kökenli eş-Şebab Hareketi üstlenmişti.
