Cumhurbaşkanı Abdullah Gül, Amerika'da katıldığı bir toplantıda Gezi olayları ile ilgili soru üzerine, çarpıcı açıklamalarda bulundu.

Kendisine eylemler ensasında polisin tavrı sorulan Gül, 'Şimdi 5. Cadde'de birkaç yüz kişi toplansa, caddenin ortasına lastikler yaksa, 'bu yolu tıkıyorum ben' dese, bunu bazen gündüz, bazen gece saat 10'da yapsa New York polisi ne yapar? Ne yaparsa onu yapıyor İstanbul polisi de...' ifadelerini kullandı.

Gül, 'Bu ve benzeri olayların başlangıcı ile ilgili açıkçası gurur da duyarım. Çünkü şundan dolayı; Türkiye'yi bilenler, tanıyanlar 10-15 yıl önce Türkiye hangi gündemlerle dünyanın kamuoyuna gelirdi veya Türkiye'nin problemleri neydi? Bugün ise Türkiye'nin problemleri ne? İstanbul'daki olayların başlangıcı aynı Washington'da, Londra'da, New York'ta olduğu gibi çevre bilinci, şehrin yapılması ile ilgili bu bina buraya yakışır, yakışmaz kaygıları ile ortaya çıkan bir olay. Bu tip problemler başta demokratik, gelişmiş ülkelerin problemleri. Türkiye'nin problemleri buna benzer problemler haline geldi. Önce bunun bilinmesini isterim.

Türkiye'nin problemleri veya bu cinayetlerle ilgili, çok büyük işsizliklerle ilgili, çok büyük anti demokratik uygulamalar veya diktatörlükle, otorotizm ile ilgili değil. Bir nokta da Washington'da da göreceğiniz benzer sebeplerle başlayan olaylar. Önce bunu bilmenizi isterim. O bakımdan da demek ki Türkiye'yi nereden nereye getirmişiz, diye övünürüm. Dolayısıyla işin bu safhası ile ilgili zaten mesajları aldığımızı ilk gün söyledik, hükümet de söyledi. O doğrultuda planları, projeleri tekrar revize edildi. Ama büyük bir ülkede, 80 milyona yaklaşan bir ülkede şüphesiz ki çeşitli radikal akımlar var. Bu radikal akımlar bunu fırsat bilerek bunun üzerinden daha sonra bir çok illegal gösteriler yapmaya başladı. Zaman zaman yine oluyor. Bunlarla ilgili de gerekli tedbirler alınıyor. Ve bunlarda da gerekli mücadele yapılıyor.'
