BBC'nin haberine göre, 1928 kısa filmi "Steamboat Willie"nin karakterleri Mickey ve Minnie Mouse, ABD telif hakları süresinin 95 yıl olmasından dolayı kamu malı oldu.
Telif haklarının ortadan kalmasıyla eski karakterler istenilen animasyon, ürün ve yaratıcı işlerde, ortaya çıkan ürünün Disney malı olarak gösterilmemesi şartıyla ücretsiz ve izinsiz kullanılabilecek.
Duke Center Kamu Malı Çalışmaları Direktörü Jennifer Jenkins, karakterlerin kamu malı olmasının uzun süredir beklenen sembolik bir olay olduğunu ifade etti.
Modern Mickey ve Minnie Mouse karakterlerinin telif hakları ise halen Disney'de bulunuyor.
Bu sevilen animasyon karakterlerinin yanı sıra, ünlü çocuk kitabı "The House at Pooh Corner", Charlie Chaplin'in romantik komedi filmi "The Circus" ve Virginia Woolf'un "Orlando" kitabı da kamu malı haline geldi.
